Fiji Travel Guide

Fiji travel is spread out over 300 islands lies at the hub of the South Pacific. The classic South Sea Island shore predominates - a long curve of bright white sand fringed by palms and lapped by shallow pellucid seas. But beaches of black sand exist, rocky beaches too, even cliffs, though of no great height. There are dunes as well which shift with the forces of nature to reveal things long buried by time.

Nadi Airport & Viti Levu
Nadi Airport, location of the international airport and where most travellers spend at least their first night, is on the dry west coast of Viti Levu. Nadi is a sprawling community, slightly inland and backed by lovely mountains with the beach area at Wailaloa and the resort area on Denarau Island. The beach unfortunately is dreary with murky waters but nice views of the offshore islands. The Nadi Area is a great base for exploring. The offshore coral islands can be visited on half and full day tours and the surrounding river valleys and mountains are truly beautiful. Koroyanitu, half an hour by road to the north, is particularly scenic with lookouts, traditional villages, waterfalls and hiking trails.

The coast south of Nadi is mostly covered in mangroves and the land around it devoted to sugar cane farming and pine forests. Natadola Beach is the first stretch of golden white sand and the surrounding coast is the best spot on the island for beach surfing, body surfing and windsurfing. The Coral Coast is just over an hour by road to the south of Nadi with the small market town of Sigatoka. It is Fiji's premier family resort destination, with adozen large resorts spread out along a 40km stretch of rainforest coastline. The beaches are picturesque but swimming and snorkelling can be restricted in places. There's a good variety of day tours on offer from cultural centres to wilderness trips.

Pacific Harbour, along the south east coast of Viti Levu, is the islands eco-tourism and adventure centre. The mountains inland are rugged with remote villages sitting alongside the twisting rivers. Overnight village stays, river tours and rafting trips are offered by GreenTurtle Fiji. The waters offshore are excellent for deep sea fishing, scuba diving and surfing. The capital city of Suva sits on a peninsula on the south east corner of Viti Levu. Surrounded by lush mountains and with a lovely harbour setting, Suva is a vibrant cosmopolitan city with lots of good shops, bars and nightclubs and a great museum. Unfortunately there is no beach and being windward receives a lot of rainfall. However, the villages inland from Suva in the highlands of Naitasiri and Namosi are amongst the most picturesque and traditional in Fiji and an overnight stya is highly recommended.

The east coast of Viti Levu is very remote and mostly covered by mangrove forests. The villages inland from Suva in the highlands of Naitasiri and Namosi are amongst the most picturesque and traditional in Fiji and an overnight stya is highly recommended with bilibile rafting, pig hunting, waterfalls and spectacular hiking. The North Coast is dominated by sugar cane farms and rolling hills with remote villages inland and the towering Mt Tomainivi, Fiji's highest mounatin. Gorgeous Nananu-i-Ra island is just 10 minutes offshore from Rakiraki Town. The small island has some excellent beaches to explore and great scuba diving.

Mamanuca Islands
The Mamanuca Group is only 10 minutes by plane from Nadi Airport or half an hour by boat. It is renowned in travel brochures as a romantic holiday resort destination. Its great beaches also make it popular for day trips from Nadi. Scuba diving, sailing, fishing, parasailing and kayaking are available throughout the island group. Backpackers can also enjoy a village stay in the larger islands or on several tiny coral island retreats. The outer Mamanuca Islands was the film location of Castaway, featuring Tom Hanks. Still deserted, these islands are popular with day cruise itineraries.

Yasawa Islands
The Yasawa Group extends to the north-west of Nadi Airport. The islands have some of the best beaches in Fiji with excellent snorkelling in sheltered lagoons. There are two luxury resorts and a lots of locally-run beach huts for backpackers and discerning travellers, many alongside a picturesque fishing village. Several luxury cruise companies offer 3- and 7-night trips cruising along the islands. The Yasawas are low lying volcanic islands with some of the best coastal walking trails in Fiji. There are also traditional fishing vilages to visit and the limestone caves in the Northern Yasawas. The Yasawas is the most popular region to visit for backpackers and budget holidaymakers with over a dozen excellent budget beach resorts to visit. Travel to the island is from Nadi aboard the daily 200-passenger fast catamaran, the Yasawa Flyer.

Southern Islands
The Southern Islands is renowned for world class surfing and scuba diving with the world famous Astrolabe Reef with its coral gardens and drift dives. Kadavu has a rugged coastline, mostly without roads, with a mix of tropical rainforest and grassland hills with several small resorts hidden in secluded bays along the coastline.

Lomaiviti Group
The Lomaiviti Group lies off the east coast of Viti Levu. It is a mix of small coral atolls (a few with small resorts or backpacker hang-outs) and larger volcanic islands and is a quieter alternative to the Yasawa Group in the west of the country. Historic Levuka Town on Ovalau in the Lomaiviti Group is a popular centre for eco-tourism and has many historical sights from the colonial era when it was Fiji's capital. Surrounded by lush tropical mountains, there are several good hikes and natural swimming pools.

Northern Islands
Vanua Levu, the second largest island in Fiji and lying north of Viti levu, is renowned as Fiji's rainforest, sailing and scuba diving experience. Savusavu Town boasts a picturesque marina and a small town with lots of cafes and restaurants. Savusavu Bay is surrounded by beautiful tropical rain forests and mangrove estuaries making it a wonderful place to explore. The Rainbow Reef between Vanua Levu and Taveuni is Fiji's most renowned coral reef with spectacular soft corals, the great white wall and lots of marine life.

The Garden Island of Taveuni has some wonderful rainforest parks and hiking trails with great views and waterfalls and colourful parrots and other endemic birds. There's lots of accommodation for discerning travellers from upmarket boutique eco-resorts to forest lodges and although beaches are scarce, there are several stunning beach settings. Offshore from Taveuni are several beautiful islands with stunning beaches backed by lush tropical rainforest.
