Nadi Airport, location of the international airport and where most travellers spend at least their first night, is on the dry west coast of Viti Levu. Nadi is a sprawling community, slightly inland and backed by lovely mountains with the beach area at Wailaloa and the resort area on Denarau Island. The beach unfortunately is dreary with murky waters but nice views of the offshore islands. The Nadi Area is a great base for exploring. The offshore coral islands can be visited on half and full day tours and the surrounding river valleys and mountains are truly beautiful. Koroyanitu, half an hour by road to the north, is particularly scenic with lookouts, traditional villages, waterfalls and hiking trails.

The coast south of Nadi is mostly covered in mangroves and the land around it devoted to sugar cane farming and pine forests. Natadola Beach is the first stretch of golden white sand and the surrounding coast is the best spot on the island for beach surfing, body surfing and windsurfing. The Coral Coast is just over an hour by road to the south of Nadi with the small market town of Sigatoka. It is Fiji's premier family resort destination, with adozen large resorts spread out along a 40km stretch of rainforest coastline. The beaches are picturesque but swimming and snorkelling can be restricted in places. There's a good variety of day tours on offer from cultural centres to wilderness trips.

Pacific Harbour, along the south east coast of Viti Levu, is the islands eco-tourism and adventure centre. The mountains inland are rugged with remote villages sitting alongside the twisting rivers. Overnight village stays, river tours and rafting trips are offered by GreenTurtle Fiji. The waters offshore are excellent for deep sea fishing, scuba diving and surfing. The capital city of Suva sits on a peninsula on the south east corner of Viti Levu. Surrounded by lush mountains and with a lovely harbour setting, Suva is a vibrant cosmopolitan city with lots of good shops, bars and nightclubs and a great museum. Unfortunately there is no beach and being windward receives a lot of rainfall. However, the villages inland from Suva in the highlands of Naitasiri and Namosi are amongst the most picturesque and traditional in Fiji and an overnight stya is highly recommended.

The east coast of Viti Levu is very remote and mostly covered by mangrove forests. The villages inland from Suva in the highlands of Naitasiri and Namosi are amongst the most picturesque and traditional in Fiji and an overnight stya is highly recommended with bilibile rafting, pig hunting, waterfalls and spectacular hiking. The North Coast is dominated by sugar cane farms and rolling hills with remote villages inland and the towering Mt Tomainivi, Fiji's highest mounatin. Gorgeous Nananu-i-Ra island is just 10 minutes offshore from Rakiraki Town. The small island has some excellent beaches to explore and great scuba diving.
